(More customer reviews)I have owned two of the Norelco beard trimmers from this line over the last 6-7 years. I believe they were models Norelco T-6000 and Philips Norelco T-860.
The 6000 was designed such that it couldn't be used corded... if it was plugged in, the motor wouldn't run. The motor only ran off the unit's internal, non-replaceable batteries. And when the batteries died after about 4 years, the clipper died. Planned obsolescence.
But I guess I hadn't learned my lesson yet. I liked it well enough that I went out and bought a T-860. I mean, this line does have some nice features, such as the ability to dial up 9 different length settings without switching blade guides, a feature I truly like. Cleaning is easy, the way the head is designed... just pop it open and brush the hair out of the blades, no tools required. The 860 even touted the fact that the motor took precedence over the charger, so it could be used corded. Perfect, I thought.
Now I learn the truth... the truth is that if the battery won't hold any charge at all, the motor still won't work, whether it's plugged in or not! Again, planned obsolescence.
So the battery on my T-860 just died flat dead this morning after only about 3 years this time, and I'm out looking for a new beard trimmer. But now I've learned my lesson... stay away from these Norelco battery-operated trimmers! The fact of the matter is, the only time I'm ever away from an electrical outlet is when I'm camping, and I generally don't trim my beard then anyway! After about the first year, I always ended up using the T-860 as a corded trimmer anyway, because it wouldn't hold a charge for 5 minutes while I trimmed my beard. So I'm used to working with the cord at this point.
I can save the environment the little bit of toxic heavy metals in the NiMH batteries, and just buy a corded trimmer that has no batteries at all. It will probably last the rest of my life.
Bottom line: These Norelco trimmers have some nice features, but obsolescence is built into them and they only last a few short years.
