Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I'm surprised too at the negative reviews.
I just bought mine at the local bricks-and-mortar Sharper Image store (albeit for a couple of dollars more rather than the price of $9 advertised here at Amazon) because I needed a quick haircut, and by golly it worked; the clumps of hair on my bathroom floor are testament to the fact that it cuts hair.
For those who gave negative reviews: When you turn the ON switch and you hear the sound of the motor, make sure you push the slider button ALL THE WAY until it LOCKS into place, otherwise, the switch could slide back into the OFF position while you are trimming. That happened to me; I turned it on without locking, and while it was being run through my hair, it seemed to die on me. I thought the batteries had died within just a few minutes of use, before I figured out what the problem was.
Here are the positive features:
1) Because it's battery operated, you don't have to worry about electrical cords getting in the way or falling into the sink and electrocuting you.
2) You can extend the handle so that you can trim the left side of your head (if you're right handed).
3) The motor is surprisingly powerful, given that you are using 2 AAA batteries.
4) It is inexpensive and pays for itself in the first use. I typically spend about $12 on a haircut anyways, and have been other places that charged more.
5) It can cut hair at four different lengths: The main unit has an adjustable guide which provides two lengths (extremely short and very short), and then there are two attachments for longer lengths.
6) It's well designed to handle like a comb, especially when you consider the shape of standard electric clippers (which are a little hard to use on yourself on your own head, beause that's not what it's designed for).
The negative features:
1) (minor) I wonder why they didn't go with 2 AA (larger) batteries. Same voltage, but wouldn't it last longer between battery replacements? Maybe they wanted to keep the unit lightweight.
2) (minor) If I'm not mistaken, it seems to be designed for right handed people. I'm right handed, so I don't have a problem. I'd be curious to see how left-handers work it out.
Conclusion: This device is a good investment.
