(More customer reviews)Is it better than the $20 clipper that you bought at Wal-Mart? YES. It has a powerful motor, a great battery, and it charges in 1 hour. On a full charge, it cuts for about an hour. For me, that means several haircuts per charge (I'm not a barber, just a guy who shaves his head twice a week).
Do you "need" this clipper? Of course not. Spending $200+ on clippers is downright silly. Full disclosure: these clippers ROCK! I don't regret my purchase for a moment.
If you need some reasons to your purchase, here you go:
* It's CORDLESS. Cords suck. You already have a cordless phone, a cordless razor, and a cordless drill. Why not a cordless clipper?
* It looks and feels like a $200+ clipper. It's overpriced, but at least you won't feel like you have been ripped off.
* It has a replaceable battery. Rechargeable batteries fail over time. When this battery fails, you can buy a new one (only $65!!). The battery is Ni-CD, not NiMH or Li-Ion. It's an old technology, but a durable one. Same technology that powers many power tools.
* The blades are replaceable and interchangeable. Want to add a trimming blade? No problem. Switch blades in 20 seconds. No screwdriver required. I don't know why that's cool, but it is. For the record, I have never switched blades.
* You can use it with a cord. A really long cord. Cool.

Philips Norelco CC5060 Kids Clipper Review

(More customer reviews)My four-year-old son is a typical whirling dervish when I try to cut his hair (but he's a little angel when I take him to a professional barber--go figure). In the past, when I've done the cutting, I've used the adult clippers that I use on my own head. So, I thought perhaps he'd be a little more accommodating if I were use something like the Philips model. Mmmn, not so much.
Just to make clear what I'm comparing the Philips model to: I use a Forfex clippers model on my own head; it cost about $120 or so, is rechargeable/cordless, and comes with lots of attachments. Before I owned that, I had a cheapo Wahl model, maybe $25; it had a cord, got very hot, and made loud zapping noises when I turned it on. My parents had one just like it when I was a kid, and I remembered being scared by that zapping.
The Philips model *is* quiet--but no quieter than the Forfex model. I'll go out on a limb and say that most rechargeable clippers are going to be of similar quietness.
It is very nice that you only have to worry about two adjustment add-ons (the slide-on adapters that let you set the length of hair cut, from 1 inch to 1-3/4 inch with one adapter, and from 1/8th inch to 7/8ths inch with the other adapter). But the adapters seem pretty flimsy to me.
Furthermore, the product description talks about "Rounded tips [that] protect skin and ensure a comfortable cutting experience," and that's true, but only if you keep the adapters on. On the smaller adapter you can get down to 1/8th inch, and that sounds pretty close, but it didn't get close enough around the ears. So, I removed the adapter to trim around the ears, and of course, when Junior did his Linda Blair imitation, I nicked him.
With the Forfex model I use, you can adjust the cutting depth without an adapter from 0.8mm to 2.8mm. On the Philips, without the adapter, I'd estimate that the minimum cut is about 0.8mm too--but you can't adjust it any higher. The minimum cutting depth with the smaller adapter is 1/8th inch, which converts to about 3.0mm. So, you can either cut at 3.0mm and avoid nicks, or cut at 0.8mm and risk it--and nothing in between.
I do like that it's a pretty nice kit, with the shawl (er, "stylist's cape"), storage pouch, etc.
I realize that's it's not a fair comparison between a $40 product at a $120 product, but I did find other cordless/rechargeable products on Amazon in the same general price range--even one made by Philips: Philips Norelco QC5055 Power Hair Clipper. Perhaps they're not *quite* as kid-friendly, but I don't think the difference is huge.

Wahl Deluxe Self Cut Do It Yourself Haircut Kit, 18 Pieces Review

(More customer reviews)For me, getting a haircut has always been a bit of a hassle--taking time off work, driving half-way across the city to the barber shop, getting into the shop only to find that half a dozen other people are ahead of me, hoping that the available barber doesn't leave me looking any more ridiculous than I already naturally look, etc. When the owner of my regular barbershop recently passed away and his shop closed as a result, I was all of a sudden in the market for a new barber. I was a little surprised at how difficult it is to find an old-fashioned, no-nonsense barber. It seems that the vast majority of men's haircutting joints these days are "stylist" operations. They want to fluff, puff, gel and otherwise pamper your hair, with the end result being that you wind up looking like an androgynous rock star, all for a hefty price. Not my style--I'm a conservative guy and I want to look that way when I get out of the barber chair.
After not having much luck finding an old-time barber, and doing a little online research, I decided to give the Wahl self-cut clipper a try. My biggest complaint about barbers is that when I tell them I want my hair cut "short," they almost never cut it short enough to suit me. I'm not sure whether they are afraid that they will cut it too short, or whether the name of the game is to get me back into the shop as soon as possible. In any event, I figured that this self-cut trimmer would at least solve that problem in that I would be in control of my hair length.
The kit in question includes an ergonomic, L-shaped trimmer with a unique four-position rotating head, the latter of which allows the user to easily reach every part of the head. It has a comfortable padded handle and is powered by rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, so there is no inconvenient cord in the way. A red light-emitting diode on the handle illuminates when the unit is charging. According to the instruction manual, the trimmer can be left plugged into the wall outlet without danger of overcharging, so it will always be ready for use (although Wahl recommends that the unit be periodically charged and discharged to prolong the life of the nickel-cadmium batteries). The trimmer can be operated on batteries or, if the batteries are discharged or low, using the included charger/adapter. Also included are: ten clipper guides (which attach to the trimmer's cutting blade and which regulate the length of the cut), ranging in size from 1/8" to 1", including left and right ear taper attachments; a pair of scissors; a blade cleaning brush; blade oil; a styling comb; a nice cloth storage case, and, needless to say, operating instructions.
Wahl divides the head into three cutting zones: the lower part of the head (running from the bottom of the hair line to the top of the ear); the middle part of the head (running from the top of the ear to the top of the head); and the top of the head (hereafter referred to as low, middle and top). You start cutting the lower zone first, using the largest (#8, 1") guide. If that guide doesn't cut your hair short enough, you then go over the same area using the next smallest guide (#7, 7/8"). You keep doing this until you find a guide that cuts the hair to the desired length. Once this has been established, you simply increment the guide length by one size for the middle and top zones. For example, I found that the #4 (1/2"), #5 (5/8") and #6 (3/4") guides for the low, middle and top zones, respectively, produced just the right length of haircut for me. It is VERY important that you start with large guides and work your way down to the size that produces the desired result, taking off a little at a time. Starting with a guide that is too small will result in hair that may be too short for your taste (or even an unintentional scalp job!). Once you establish which guides produce the best haircut for you, you can use those guides thereafter with no need for further experimentation. Wahl has a free online instructional video on its Web site (http://consumer.wahl.com/selfcut/index.html), so you can see the product in action.
My experience? While I was initially worried about doing a scalp job on myself (if this happened I figured I could give myself a buzz cut and tell everyone that I was a Marine), I was very pleasantly surprised with the haircut that this self-cut trimmer produced and I'm now a believer. In my opinion it resulted in a haircut that is at least as good as one that I would have received in a barbershop. Not only is my hair cut to the length that I want, it looks neat, tight and conservative--just the way I like it. I also have the added satisfaction of saving a bundle on haircuts. Where I live, a basic haircut can easily set you back $20 (more for so-called "stylists"). At that rate, and if you get your hair cut at least once a month or so, it doesn't take long to recoup the cost of the trimmer. When I told my male co-workers about this trimmer, they looked at my hair and then asked me where they could buy one (several have), so I guess that the haircut can't be too bad. I'm also now cutting hair for the male members of my family using this trimmer--they get just as good a haircut as they would get from a barber and they save $20 or so in the process. I'm very happy with this product and definitely recommend it.

Wahl Homepro Haircutting Kit 22 Piece Review

(More customer reviews)I cut hair for years with this wahl set before I became a barber. The wahl clippers cut almost as good as the tools I use in the shop. The only disadvantage of these clippers is that they are not designed to do more than a few haircuts at a time (they get hot quickly), and in general they are not designed for the continual use of a barber shop (keep the blades oiled or they'll dull quickly). For doing a few occasional haircuts at home, these are definately the best clippers you'll get for less than [X], and for the average family, they should definately last at least several years if properly cared for. I've also tried a conair set, and I was very disappointed with the low quality of the accessories and they way the blades fed- they didn't cut very well.
Be sure to keep in mind that these are not completely foolproof, and they do require a certain ammount of skill and intuition to achieve good results.

This is an updated version of the Flowbee and I am not sure yet if the tubes are made of a different material. I bought a Robocut because their tube system is better. The Flowbee cuts about 3 times faster than the Robocut. The Robocut slows down periodically from its already slow speed and there is no adapter for the vacuum hose. The Robocut seems to need a lot of vacuum compared to the Flowbee. Neither is perfect but I am retiring the Robocut and buying another Flowbee because it's much better and much quicker. I give the Flowbee at least one more star than the Robocut. I would give it 5 stars if the tubes were made of unbreakable plastic.

The construction is OK: 'chrome-look' plastic, don't get fooled by the metallic shine. Very light.
The guides are OK, they fit fine (some pushing required). (Throw away the 'cape'...)
The storage case is not an organizer, it is pretty hard to fit things back in.

(More customer reviews)I use this clipper set to trim my husband's very short hair. He used to go to a stylist who charged him $25 a cut. Because his ideal cut is very close all around, he needed to get a new cut every 4 weeks or so, and those fees really add up quickly. We finally cut the cord with the stylist and bought a home clipper set.
The clipper is powerful and does not get too warm. It is easy to use and the included video makes it easy to learn to cut hair. I haven't attempted any of the more complicated cuts, we just use a Number One comb all over my husband's head and clean up the edges without any comb at all. However, we do find all the accessories to be very useful; the brush for cleaning the clippers, the lubricating oil, and the brush for sweeping stray hairs off the neck. Occasionally I use the shears to trim the hair around his ears, too. The kit also has a mirror and a plastic apron, which are helpful to have.
You really could use this kit to get started with all kinds of cuts, and Wahl is a good brand for clippers. If you are looking to get started even just occasionally, this is a great kit to have. With what we've saved in hair styling fees, this kit paid for itself a long time ago.

(More customer reviews)The great thing about this set is that it comes with a clipper and a trimmer. It feels pretty solid in your hands. There's a lot of bad things about this unit. It does not cut hair well. There was frequent hair pulling. The blades get pretty hot after 20-30 min of uses. Can not cut well through thick hair.

(More customer reviews)Very beautiful and excellent equipment, however I would make some remarks:
1 no upper cut than 1.2 cm (that's my fault; I had badly read the description! I used to use one of which was 1.5 and 1.8 cm, which suited me better) I found that 1.2 cm is a bit too short for me! Anyway at first I will use it and see if it works well. This is the case after nearly two months of use. Apart from this it is aesthetic and was well in hand.
Very very noisy, accumulate hair on the back of the cutting edge, not sure whether it will still be sharp enough in a year

Wahl Nylon # 2 Attachment Comb For 1/4" Cuts Review

(More customer reviews)I bought two #2 attachments for my Wahl trimmer and the work, but do not fit properly. They fall off and make an annoying vibration noise. I would consider getting them from another source. I ended up having to tape it on so it doesn't fall off. I'm not too happy with this purchase.
